High Altitude Wheat Free Chocolate Cake [18 Sep 2009|03:46pm]
This is a small quantity of dough, suitable for a small amount of cupcakes. I baked about 2/3 of the dough in a 5x2 inch loaf pan in a toaster oven and it behaved quite nicely. This is an adult chocolate cake - which is to say, it's dark, rich, and not too sweet.

Canon and language [25 Aug 2009|05:40pm]
Other "canon in fiction" talking here -

If it's not in canon, why write it?

I was thinking about the language of canon. That's really a terrible way of putting it, but if you're dealing with translated work, your canon ends up with the nuances of the original, and the nuances of the translation. It's impossible for a translation to perfectly show the good and the bad of an original. Some times the differences come down to pedantic little details, and some times the differences completely change the meaning of the work. Technically, you could argue that different versions of a canon show similar issues (so, say, movie canon is not book canon.)

But when you say my canon - )

More Early RPGs [07 Apr 2009|11:55am]
So, moving on, let's talk about Final Fantasy II versus Dragon Quest III. They came out the same year. Dragon Quest III in the start of the year, and Final Fantasy II in December. It's highly unlikely that the programmers for Final Fantasy II were able to play Dragon Quest III in depth. So, how do these games compare to their earlier iterations?

Early RPG Analysis [03 Apr 2009|11:19am]
So, I've been poking slowly through Dragon Quest / Warrior I and II and Final Fantasy I (GBA remake.) It's interesting what I've been noticing (ignoring, of course, the ways that the remakes made the systems easier to use.)

So - finally got the last Christmas present [20 Feb 2009|08:16pm]
Preordered Retro Game Challenge for the DS. Thanks to delays, it came out recently.

It's a surprisingly good translation, and the story mode's actually fun to play. One thing I love about it is how they handled the voice clips. You see )

So - finished FFIII DS [18 Dec 2008|03:38pm]
It's an interesting RPG. From a historic perspective, it feels more to me like an 'early' Final Fantasy game, what with the world dependent on the Elemental Crystals, and the world that transforms in scope instead of state.

Well, hello, winter. [14 Dec 2008|07:47am]
So, every year, we do a tree trimming party.

This year it's today.

Today, I woke up to an almost blizzard. Hello world.

It is pretty at least, if you ignore the wind gusts. It may or may not blow over. We'll see.

Another year older - [23 Jun 2008|08:25am]
Mark another birthday down.

The 4th Wild Adapter is pretty interesting. Comparatively cheerful after the last volume. Also got another Cowboys Fringants CD "Attache ta tuque." Mostly for "Le Gars D'La Compagnie" which is a very lovely song even with my non-existent French skills.

Was up in rural Colorado for the weekend. Lovely weather up there. In the mid 30's at night and the low 70's for a high. Saw a ghost town where the wind always blew from the west. Kind of spooky in a way. They said it got ridiculously high winds in the winter. Needless to say, the actual houses were just fragments of structures. You'd have to be brave or awfully greedy for the gold to stay there in the winter, I'd think.

Canon blather [18 Aug 2007|05:58pm]
Part of this is in reaction to the sort of people who say that, for example, since action X never happened in canon, the story is a terrible waste of time and effort and horribly written. I've seen claims about that running from everything from events (the author didn't predict the path of canon) or shipping (the author wanted to see Jane and Suzy not Jane and Edward.) I've also seen milder complaints that someone is too fond of fanon characterizations for characters or things along that line. Even more milder complaints could be simply that someone's using canon that only appears in an obscure website (or ignoring it) or that someone only uses canon from a movie instead of a book.

Canon definitions )

Instead, I'm more interested in the plot - )

Here's some examples of how I use canon - )

Random SNES game [07 Feb 2007|06:08pm]
So I saw a game called "The Last Battle," and instantly thought that it sounded like a generic Final Fantasy clone. It's by Teichiku and was published in 1994. Starting the game up showed - a scene in a classroom with some thuggish looking kid learning magic. Generic. Generically generic.

Cover of the game was generic. There's your generic green tuniced hero. A generic little dwarf like guy. A generic pixie ish girl and someone else.

Knitting update - [25 Jan 2007|02:56pm]
Well, I tested the idea of a bias scarf with lace at the edges. It seems to be be working. Knitpicks Shimmer is a lovely yarn, if you ignore that the dying kills any fancy lace. I also tested a pattern using a nifty leaf lace pattern from a Japanese pattern book, but alas, I was one stitch off. Fustrating to find that out.

Sometime, I should post a poll asking opinions on gauge questions. With pictures. Someone claimed that you should aim for 3 stitches to the inch for a hap shawl like garment (hap shawls = square with wavy edges around it, basically.) I think 3 stitches to the inch unblocked is too wide.

Snow! Also, babble about NES games [29 Dec 2006|12:45pm]
There's about a foot of snow out there. If not more. My net connection may be spotty.

And some games - )

In other news, in Idea no Hi, [info]yukie1013 has reached the point where you can fight Idea - and we have all the general's names. Apparently her mighty 4 generals are: Demok, Equale, Piizu, and Jaste.

.... I still think they're supposed to be puns on peace, democracy, equality, and justice. If you're interested, [info]satsu, I think Yukie's got screenshots of the Idea conversation, where some nifty stuff is revealed.

Yukie - [10 Nov 2006|01:30am]
Fought the second general in Idea no Hi and won. This one's a charming lad named Equale who's wearing a disturbing spiked codpiece along with football armor.

His tongue's sticking out a bit when he first shows up.

It stays sticking out a tiny bit when he attacks. It's like this adorable baffled guy trying to understand how this entire thing works.

.... The fact that he's using an ax and trying to attack the party in the night is beside the point.

Mysterious Characters [24 Oct 2006|02:17pm]
Let's say you've got a character that you don't want to necessarily know their every plan and motive. Or, it's just a character that you can't (or don't need) to get deeply immersed into their life. If you tend to write people with a very close viewpoint, this can be hard. So, what can you do?

Random stuff on criticism [29 Aug 2006|11:32am]
Just something I've been poking at.

Constructive criticism really tends to break down into three important classes in my mind. One is the setting (virtual or actual) of the criticism, another is the expected amount / types of discussion, and the last is the audience in question. Sometimes, it seems like people are blind to how these classes work.

Let me explain. )

So, comments? Ideas? I haven't seen a lot of places really breaking criticism down into these categories, so that's why I typed it out.

Food: Amazing Cheese Sandwhich [03 Aug 2006|01:12pm]
Get some bread. Ideally something with some heft to it, so it can withstand getting the goo of the cheese. Any bread works, as long as it's not too sweet (it'll burn) or too wet (won't crisp.)

Fillings could be - )

So, it's filled. Fry on one side in a fairly dry pan. Cover until it looks like the cheese is melted inside and the bottom is lightly browned. Flip it. While the second side fries, grate some cheese.

Lift your sandwhich. Sprinkle the cheese on the pan and kind of try to have it be a sandwhich sized plop. Drop the sandwhich on the cheese. Carefully poke the sandwhich, and as the cheese browns, it will not stick. Once the cheese is attractively browned, remove, flip cheese side up, and serve.

Good with soup.
