So - finished FFIII DS [Dec. 18th, 2008|03:38 pm]
Rav
It's an interesting RPG. From a historic perspective, it feels more to me like an 'early' Final Fantasy game, what with the world dependent on the Elemental Crystals, and the world that transforms in scope instead of state.

Cut to spare people uninterested in world buildy / mechanic ramblingCollapse )

Well, hello, winter. [Dec. 14th, 2008|07:47 am]

So, every year, we do a tree trimming party.

This year it's today.

Today, I woke up to an almost blizzard. Hello world.

It is pretty at least, if you ignore the wind gusts. It may or may not blow over. We'll see.

This recipe makes for a thick and flavorful hot chocolate mixture - it's not super sweet though.

Another year older - [Jun. 23rd, 2008|08:25 am]

Mark another birthday down.

The 4th Wild Adapter is pretty interesting. Comparatively cheerful after the last volume. Also got another Cowboys Fringants CD "Attache ta tuque." Mostly for "Le Gars D'La Compagnie" which is a very lovely song even with my non-existent French skills.

Was up in rural Colorado for the weekend. Lovely weather up there. In the mid 30's at night and the low 70's for a high. Saw a ghost town where the wind always blew from the west. Kind of spooky in a way. They said it got ridiculously high winds in the winter. Needless to say, the actual houses were just fragments of structures. You'd have to be brave or awfully greedy for the gold to stay there in the winter, I'd think.

Canon blather [Aug. 18th, 2007|05:58 pm]

Part of this is in reaction to the sort of people who say that, for example, since action X never happened in canon, the story is a terrible waste of time and effort and horribly written. I've seen claims about that running from everything from events (the author didn't predict the path of canon) or shipping (the author wanted to see Jane and Suzy not Jane and Edward.) I've also seen milder complaints that someone is too fond of fanon characterizations for characters or things along that line. Even more milder complaints could be simply that someone's using canon that only appears in an obscure website (or ignoring it) or that someone only uses canon from a movie instead of a book.

Canon definitionsCollapse )

Instead, I'm more interested in the plot -Collapse )

Here's some examples of how I use canon -Collapse )

Random SNES game [Feb. 7th, 2007|06:08 pm]

So I saw a game called "The Last Battle," and instantly thought that it sounded like a generic Final Fantasy clone. It's by Teichiku and was published in 1994. Starting the game up showed - a scene in a classroom with some thuggish looking kid learning magic. Generic. Generically generic.

Cover of the game was generic. There's your generic green tuniced hero. A generic little dwarf like guy. A generic pixie ish girl and someone else.

Knitting update - [Jan. 25th, 2007|02:56 pm]
Rav
Well, I tested the idea of a bias scarf with lace at the edges. It seems to be be working. Knitpicks Shimmer is a lovely yarn, if you ignore that the dying kills any fancy lace. I also tested a pattern using a nifty leaf lace pattern from a Japanese pattern book, but alas, I was one stitch off. Fustrating to find that out.

Sometime, I should post a poll asking opinions on gauge questions. With pictures. Someone claimed that you should aim for 3 stitches to the inch for a hap shawl like garment (hap shawls = square with wavy edges around it, basically.) I think 3 stitches to the inch unblocked is too wide.
