Take 7 all purpose potatoes. Peel. Pop them in a bowl of water. Set the oven to 375.
Chop an onion as finely as you have patience. Chop about a half cup of ham. Also grate about a cup of swiss.
Fry onions in an oven safe pan with butter / olive oil. Season with salt, pepper, pinch of nutmeg.
Slice the potatoes while the onions fry. You want them to be about a 1/4 of an inch thick. Add to the onions when the onions are clear.
Add enough cream to wet the potatoes and boil the dish on the stove until the potatoes are tender to the poke of a knife. That'll be about 30 minutes.
Add ham, stir, and top with cheese. Bake about 10 minutes covering if it seems to be drying out. It's done when the cheese looks lovely.
