At the doctor's office -

Woman: May I look at that?
Me: *hands over sock on 3 double pointed needles* It's the start of a sock. Here's a finished one.
Other woman: Oh wow! Look at how amazing that is. She's crocheting a sock. Wow!
Me: .....

At the kid's knitting group -

Kid: *has a strip that's 4 inches by 2 inches* Is this big enough to make a really long snake?
Me: ...... That'll make a 4 inch snake.

I also got to explain that a strip can become a tube. On the good end of things, the kids managed to learn how to knit in the round (welcome to the world of making tubes instead of strips.)
